A visit to Viborg – called the “Heart of Jutland” – is a trip through history, culture and nature.
Visitors will find a wonderful mixture of all that is fascinating in the Viborg region. Almost 400 years ago a historian said: “Viborg is like the mother of Jutland”. The history of Viborg can be traced back a very long time. Take a walk through the cobbled streets and imagine the bustle of life in the middle ages. You can even take one of the guided tours of the old town (as described on one of the following pages) or simply follow the route yourself with a tour map from the tourist office.
Traces of the historical past can be seen everywhere. The most famous sight in town is the Viborg Cathedral ( see churches) which was built in 1864-1876 as a round-arched Romanesque granite church and is still an impressive feat of construction. In it you can see huge wall-murals painted by Joakim Skovgaard.
And what could be more relaxing than a boat/canoe trip? The pleasure boat “Margrethe I” offers regular sailing trips during the summer months around the Viborg lakes ( see separate page about boat trips).
Viborg is an excellent base for sightseeing trips and excursions to the rest of Jutland, Everywhere can be reached within a one or two hours drive.
We – the staff at VisitViborg – will do our utmost to make sure that you have a pleasant stay with unforgettable experiences and impressions, and we look forward to welcoming you at our office!
